China, the Philippines and Iran have the largest shopping malls in the world
Have you imagined 2,500 stores in the same place spread over
659,612 square meters? or even planned to go shopping in a space where you will
find replicas of the most famous tourist places like the Arc de Triomphe in
Paris? Well, all this exists and has it New South China Mall, the gigantic
shopping center built in Dongguan city and leading the ranking of the largest
in the world.
Just to get an idea, this space is equivalent to about three
times the built area of Centro Mayor of Bogota, which is the commercial
center that heads the list of the largest in the country.
The Golden Resources Mall, located in Beijing under an area
of 557,419 square meters, is in second place, while SM City North Edsa is
ranked third overall and the first in Southeast Asia. This complex, which
opened in 1985, has already had several expansions, which to date have a
commercial area of 482,878 square meters where there are 1,100 shops and 400
food establishments.
Iran (Isfahan City Center and Persian Gulf Complex),
Malaysia (1 Utama, Mid Valley Megamall and Sunway Pyramid), Thailand (Central
World) and Turkey (Cehavir Mall) are also countries with gigantic trading
spaces within the top 10.
Carlos Betancourt, president of the Colombian Association of
Shopping Centers (Acecolombia), said that "the trend in these large areas,
especially in China, are vertical infrastructures of 15 levels given their
population density conditions and also are shopping centers that have linked
their spaces to a massive transport system, such as the metro, a light rail or
bus terminal. "
Carlos Valencia, an expert in shopping centers, explained
that "the size of shopping centers apart from the capacity of consumption
of the population, must also see that in these markets are all the most
important brands of luxury to world level ".
Regional dynamics
These large formats are not foreign to Latin America. The
Albrook Mall of Panama City (with 220,000 square meters, 470 stores and 400
kiosks) is the largest in the region. Parque D. Pedro, located in Campinas
state of Sao Paulo, has a commercial area of 141,000 square meter. It is
followed by Costanera in Santiago de Chile (132,000 square meters of built
area), Santafé in Mexico City (128,367 square meters), Centro Mayor in Bogotá
(109,000 square meters), Jockey Plaza in Lima (100,000 square meters) and
Unicenter in Buenos Aires (895,204 square meters).
The latter is owned byCoscosud, opened in November 1988,
being one of the first commercial centers to be established in the country and
receives annually more than 30 million visits. Betancourt said that "the
trend in Latin America is due to the fact that there are more department stores
and a great variety of entertainment for the whole family that seeks to
generate a long stay. One finds, for example, special areas such as restaurants
on a tablecloth apart from the traditional food court. "
